Statues of Kingman

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

from Monolith Garden Trail and White Cliff Wagon Trail, Kingman, 2022/03/13

Kingman is a city of Arizona which is known as the heart of historical Route 66. It was named after Lewis Kingman, the civil engineer who surveyed the railroad from Flagstaff to Needles through Kingman in 1880.

Since I moved to Arizona in 2020, I often drive on Road 40 (part of Route 66) from Prescott to LA passing through Kingman. Each time when I pass Kingman, I was attracted by the black rock tops of the hills on the roadside, feeling like passing a gate of an old historical ruins.

So I planed a road trip during this spring break driving from Prescott to Kingman and spent a whole day hiking to explore the rocks. Before I started my trip, I checked some information about Kingman, and found the emblem of Kingman containing the map of Mohave County in the center. It's interesting to notice that the shape of the map looks like a standing rock and a figure of an ancient King-man.

With this figure in my mind, I indeed found many of the standing rocks on my hiking looks simply like statues of crowds of men.

Among them, I found each standing rock a statue of a vivid human figure. Following are a few of examples from the hike of Monolith Garden trail.

I was more astonished by the view of rock heads along the The White Cliff Wagon trail, which was the first wagon road transporting ore in late 1800, the starting point that made Kingman the heart of Route 66.

The magnificent view of the White Cliff rock figures reminds me of Rushmore president faces.

With this comparison, The giant rocks at the entry of the trail look more vivid like two Kingman figures as I view them again at the exit.

"The Greeks did not believe that the gods created the universe. It was the other way about: the universe created the Gods. Before there were Gods, Heaven and Earth had been formed. They were the first parents. The Titans were their children, and the Gods were their grandchildren." -Mythology, Edith Hamilton.

These rock heads could be the fossils of Titan that lived on earth in previous life cycles. Not only that, The Titan's parents could be even larger figures whose fossils were washed out by ocean along the coastline of the Earth. That's why you can see giant figures of all kinds of lives on google satellite images.
